I decided to move to Afton Oaks Independent & Assisted Living mainly because of safety. I’d been falling in my home, and after a short hospital stay and some therapy, it became clear that my house just wasn’t accessible enough—especially with winter coming. I use a walker now, and getting around, getting groceries, or handling little things like home repairs just wasn’t realistic anymore. It’s hard to find someone to take on small projects, and I didn’t want to keep struggling. So I chose to come here.
I’ve lived in Elma for over 50 years, and Afton Oaks allowed me to stay close to the community I love. I already knew some of the tenants, and that helped ease the transition. It’s been a new experience learning how everything works here, but the staff have all been kind, and I’ve slowly been figuring things out.
One of my favorite parts of living here is the activities. I enjoy game days—Yahtzee and bingo—and going to Colonial Manor for live music or entertainment. It’s nice to stay active and social. While I haven’t gone on outings through the facility yet, I still get out now and then with friends or my daughter.
If someone needs a little extra help or therapy support, I’d definitely recommend Afton Oaks. The staff are caring, the therapy is helpful, and it’s a good place to be—especially if staying safe and connected to your community is important to you.
